Applying for a Tax File Number

1. Things you need

  • Passport with at least 6 months' validity
  • A postal address in Australia
  • Phone number and email address
  • Valid student, working holiday, bridging or permanent migration visa
You must already be in Australia before applying for your Tax File Number (TFN).

2. Apply for your TFN online

Go to the Australian Tax Office website, and sign up for a Tax File Number as a temporary visitor. This will take you to an online form where you will be asked questions regarding your:

  • personal details, including your home address in Australia
  • visa/residency status
  • ways to contact you and send you your Tax File Number
Alternatively, you can request a paper form to be posted to you. Fill it in, and make a certified copy of your passport and visa. Take these documents to an ATO office to complete your application.

3. After your application

It takes 28 days from your application for your Tax File Number to be sent to you via post. Once you receive your letter containing your TFN, keep it in a secure place to prevent identity theft

In the meantime, your data will be sent to the Department of Home Affairs to check the validity of your visa. Your information is treated carefully according to Australia's privacy laws.
